Second Week of Live Racing.

The second week of the thoroughbred season is here – and much improved from the first one! We have 8 races on both Friday night (6:30pm) and Saturday afternoon (1:00pm).

The feature on Friday is an optional claimer featuring the return of the 2015 horse of the year, and contender for the 2016 title, KILLIN ME SMALLS. He was a three time stakes winner in 2016, and won the Grade 3 Premiers at Hastings Racecourse for the second straight year. He will have some new competition via the claim box at Woodbine for trainer Greg Tracy. HEMLOCK CHANNEL was claimed via a 27 way shake in his last start at Woodbine after dropping down to the $10k level. He is a nine time winner in his career, and a winner of almost $300k. His last work jumps off the page as he covered five furlongs in a top of the morning time of :58:4. LEO’S LOOKIN appears to have plenty of speed in the early stages, and it has worked out well for him in the past carrying him to 10 career victories.

On Saturday the most interesting race on the card may come a little earlier as a pair of well meant horses square off in the 4th. MOON KING has been working up a storm getting ready for his return to the track and looks to land in an ideal spot. He was purchased with the Canadian Derby in mind last season, but didn’t make the race and wound up splitting the field in the BC Derby at Hastings. Trainer Greg Tracy hits at 50% with horses off a similar layoff – so don’t count out DICKIE DUNN either. The main competition may come from RIGHTEOUS RULER for Carson Frey. After a smart win at Santa Anita kicked off his career, he tried first level allowance horses before heading to the sidelines. He was bought out of a sale after that, and has trained smartly locally. Frey had a winner opening weekend with Phil Power, so he can get one ready off the bench as well.

10 of the 16 races this weekend will be contested at six furlongs, with the other six races at three and a half – that’s a promising sign moving forward!

The TournEvent of Champions continues on Saturday night at Northlands Park, where you can win your way into a $1 million slot tournament in Las Vegas.

Looking forward to seeing you here both days!
