Matt’s Blog — Weekend Preview November 25 – 26

Posted November 23, 2016 | Racing News

The second weekend of Standardbred racing is here, and it brings us the eliminations for both the Northlands Filly Pace and the Western Canada Pacing Derby. Post time on both Friday and Saturday is 6:30pm, with 11 races on Friday and 10 on Saturday.

For both of the eliminations the top four finishers go on to the finals.

The first of two eliminations for the Northlands Filly Pace goes in race 8, and it looks like it is headed by a standout in MONSTROUS for trainer Darryl Cutting. MONSTROUS comes in off a big win in the Super Finals where he easily romped home by four lengths under the wire. That was the 7th win of his career and brought his lifetime earnings to over $160k. JF Gagne knows him well and retains the drive on Friday night. DIVAS DRAGONFLY was a precocious two year old, racking up almost $80k in earnings through her five wins. While still winning five this year, she hasn’t been able to make the same dent in her owner’s bank account, but will try to add to the $50k she has racked up so far. SOMEWHERE A PLACE comes in from B.C. for owner, trainer and driver Serge Masse. She has six wins so far this season, and equaled her lifetime mark of 1:55 for a mile in her start on November 4th. The 10th looks much more wide open than the 8th, and it could be a scramble to figure out who gets into the final. NO GUARANTEES is another who ships over the Rockies for this race. She drew well on the inside, and looks like she can be effective from anywhere in the field. LISSOY caught lighting in a bottle in September and reeled off five straight wins as she progressed through the ranks. Hoerdt seems to have her heading in the right direction, and she should be full of confidence. She saw her win streak snapped last time out, but she was well off the pace and closed strongly in what may have been a perfect prep race. Also don’t count out Keith Clark who is always loaded for these races with CREDIT THE SHARK. JET TO THE BEACH, CENALTA ARTISTY and OUTLAW TRIGGER HAPPY all love to finish close, and are rarely out of the money. This should be a fun one.

On Saturday the races go as the 8th and 9th. In the 8th, APPELLATE looks to be a handful for Clark. He has a strong closing kick and has shown that with very tough older company of late. It looks like a similar route that Clark took to Pacing Derby last year with the eventual winner First Class Horse. BLUE STAR MAVERICK and CREDIT RISK look like the most likely upsetters, but are stuck on the outside and have a similar racing style wanting to be close to the pace. TOLLY HO is the wild card in here, getting to the races late – he didn’t make his first start until July – but he has won three of his four trips to the post. OUTLAW TURN N BURN headlines the second elimination and will race as the trailer in the field. That shouldn’t be a problem as he drops back in the field before covering ground late. He has racked up 7 wins this season, and more than $125k in earnings. WRANGLER CASH has also had a good year with almost $80k in earnings and four wins on his resume. BLUE STAR JET looks like the one to catch in this field if you put a line through his last race. He didn’t show any gate speed in his last at Northlands, and may have been prepping for this spot. PRAIRIE MYSTIC comes in off a win and could loom the upsetter.

Any way you slice it, all of these eliminations should make for some fantastic racing this weekend here at Northlands Park Racetrack and Casino. First post both days is 6:30pm MST.
