Just one week until Super Finals!
On Saturday October 28th, there will be four races worth $80k each for both genders of two and three year olds. Including the consolations, there will be almost $400k in purse money up for grabs that night. Before we get to that day though, we have a couple of stakes races as well as the Open this Friday and Saturday.
On Friday the extremely tough TAJMEALLOVER takes on six rivals in the 3rd. She has won six races in a row, but if there was some vulnerability it may be now. She was just able to hold off WATCH MY LUCK last time out, with only a head between them. TAJMEALLOVER has won 40 races in her career, and it’s likely she picks up another on Friday – but the price will be very short.
The 9th is the Alberta Marquis Final for three year old fillies. Bad news for the rest of the field is that the Northlands Filly pace winner OUTLAW FIREBALL drew the fence for Dumont and JF Gagne. Following the win in the Filly Pace, she was 1-20 in one of the eliminations for the Marquis and did not disappoint. There should be ample speed to her outside to set up her late pacing style quite nicely. STEADY BREEZE goes for trainer/driver Kelly Hoerdt and could be the most likely to spring the upset. She closed from well back in the Filly Pace to be 3rd, and then went gate to wire in her elimination. She drew the outside eight hole and will need some luck. SHESAMYSTERYTOME probably needed her last start as it was her first off a qualifier following a layoff from July. She was a big 2nd behind STEADY BREEZE for Ryan Grundy, and drew much better that that one falling into the two hole.
Looking forward to Saturday, the Open will go as the 2nd with just a field of five. It’s another race with a big standout in IWONTDOTHATAGAIN who has won 13 races this year, including his last two by open lengths.
The 9th is the Alberta Maverick Final and the first question with the race is what happened to MATEO last time out. He cruised to the half in :59 and had nothing left in mid-stretch tiring to finish 3rd. He was all heart to win the Pacing Derby on the front end in 1:53:4, and couldn’t score in the elimination in 1:56:4. SENGA NITRO got the ideal draw on the fence, and has to be riding high after knocking off MATEO last time out. GET UP GIDEON won the other elimination, but came home in :32 for his last quarter. COLD CASE was closing in on ‘GIDEON but couldn’t get past in the shadow of the wire.
Both cards have 10 races, and a first post of 6:30pm.
