Just one race this weekend with Derby points on the line – the Grade 3 $250k Sam F. Davis at Tampa Bay Downs.
CATHOLIC BOY is the morning line choice off of his impressive win in the Grade 2 Remsen at Aqueduct on December 2. That was also his dirt debut following three starts, two wins, on turf. He proved that his closing kick was as good on dirt defeating next out winner Avery Island in the process. He has been working steadily for his return as a three year old.
HOLLYWOOD STAR scratched from a loaded Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park last weekend for this easier spot. He was 12-1 on the morning line in a field of 11, and is listed at 5-2 here in the field of 7. HOLLYWOOD STAR didn’t miss the exacta in his first three trips to the post, and has a big excuse for his 6th place finish from the outside post in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
VINO ROSSO is unbeaten after two starts, with the second one coming locally. He appears to have plenty of tactical speed and can adapt to any pace scenario thrown his way. It also never hurts to be sent out by Todd Pletcher, and ridden by Johnny Velazquez.
VOUCH could be the speed of the race and shouldn’t mind the outside draw. He wasn’t far behind CATHOLIC BOY when they met in the Remsen and goes for a trainer that hits at 42% off of a layoff between 61-180 days.
It’s a big card for Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday with three other supporting stakes races on the card of 12. You can watch and wager on them all here at Northlands Park.
Also, don’t forget about the early post time for Harness on Saturday – first race of 10 goes at noon.
