Can they catch PROMISES FULFILLED – that is the big question in the Grade 1, $1 million Florida Derby on Saturday at Gulfstream Park.
PROMISES FULFILLED had a pretty comfortable trip in the Fountain of Youth racing on the front end, and could get a similar trip today. He has improved with each trip to the track, and is plenty tough to catch as Breeders’ Cup Juvenile champ Good Magic proved. STRIKE POWER raced 2nd the entire way behind ‘FULFILLED in that Fountain of Youth, and couldn’t match strides late. After him, there really isn’t any other speed on paper. MISSISSIPPI will add blinkers for this one, but drew another outside post and could fall into a stalking spot. It’s hard to imagine that he will use himself early to just press the pace.
AUDIBLE won the Holy Bull before skipping the FOY, and should find a spot sitting 3rd or 4th. He does add distance for this one, and some of the Into Mischief offspring have had a tough time going this far.
CATHOLIC BOY could be the hunch play for the Easter weekend. He hasn’t run a bad race to date, and comes in off a good 2nd at the Sam F Davis at Tampa Bay Downs.
HOFBURG scored in his first try around two turns, and has every right to take another step forward as he is a half-brother to four time Grade 1 winner Emollient. He doesn’t have the seasoning that the rest of the field has, but there may be layers to his talent. The sire has thrown plenty of runners.
The Florida Derby will go as the last race of 14 on Saturday at Gulfstream, with a post time of 4:36 p.m. MT.
The doors will be open at 9:15 a.m. for early simulcasting from Dubai. We will be showing the final three races from the World Cup card – the $6 million Dubai Turf, the $6 million Sheema Classic and the $10 million Dubai World Cup.
There is also a $5 Bunwich and Coffee special at the Casino Grill.
